The Ministry of Agriculture Targets the Halal Market to Boost Export Growth to Japan

The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) is collaborating with stakeholders in Indonesia's poultry and animal feed sectors to explore Japan's halal market, aiming to accelerate export growth. Since 2017, Indonesian processed chicken meat has been entering Japan, with five units approved for entry and several others undergoing the approval process. Nasrullah, Director-General of Livestock and Animal Health, stressed the necessity of expanding Indonesian exports by leveraging the halal market in Japan. He emphasized the importance of diversifying buyers beyond the current single entity, Sari Raya Group, to bolster export volumes. This strategic push aligns with Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman's directives, aiming to improve community services and support export-oriented businesses. Nasrullah highlighted Indonesia's surplus chicken production as an opportunity to aid other nations in meeting food demands while strengthening the country's foreign exchange reserves.

To tap into Japan's halal market, Kementan has mobilized a team led by Tri Melasari, Director of Processing and Marketing of Livestock Products, alongside the Indonesian Agricultural Attaché. They engaged with potential buyers such as AEON, PT. Sky Japan Abadi, Sari Rasa Group, and ISE Food Inc., a significant player in the poultry industry and a global egg producer. During discussions, a Letter of Intent (LoI) was signed to escalate exports and explore investments in egg processing industries, an area relatively overlooked by entrepreneurs. Indonesian businesses are set to follow up promptly by tailoring packaging and flavors to Japanese preferences and sending product samples. Additionally, Nasrullah highlighted plans for joint promotions with the Indonesian Embassy (KBRI), including participation in Japanese exhibitions and business matching events. These coordinated efforts aim to significantly enhance export activities, positively impacting the country's foreign exchange reserves.
