Belitung Enters UNESCO Global Geopark, KEK Tanjung Kelayang Becomes Investment Hub

The Special Economic Zone (SEZ) is a strategic government policy aimed at accelerating regional development by establishing new economic growth centers to balance development across regions and create employment opportunities. Currently, there are 20 designated SEZs, with a cumulative investment realization of IDR 35.71 trillion or 25% of total investments in Q3 2023, providing employment for 31,557 individuals. One notable SEZ is Tanjung Kelayang, located on Belitung Island, officially designated as an SEZ according to Government Regulation No. 6/2016. President Jokowi inaugurated this SEZ on March 14, 2019, listing it among the top 10 priority tourism destinations. Known for its scenic white sandy beaches and exotic panoramas adorned with giant granite rocks, Tanjung Kelayang has been part of the UNESCO Global Geopark since 2021, showcasing the biodiversity of Belitung Island. Tanjung Kelayang SEZ has hosted several high-level international meetings, including the G20 Development Ministers Meeting and the ASEAN Blue Economy 2023. The SEZ actively collaborates with local Small and Medium Enterprises (UMKM), such as the Batik Sepiak UMKM, promoting their products at international events held within the SEZ.

Emphasizing sustainable tourism development and environmental awareness, Tanjung Kelayang SEZ projects an investment influx of IDR 10.3 trillion and envisions employing 5,000 people by 2036. Various investment opportunities are available, encompassing adventure tourism, entertainment and relaxation, arts, education, food and beverages, accommodation, MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions), and supporting infrastructure. The iconic giant granite rock formations, resembling a bird's head, particularly the Kelayang bird, contribute to the allure of Tanjung Kelayang. Positioned as a sustainable tourism benchmark in Indonesia, Tanjung Kelayang's commitment to nature protection and sustainable development aligns with the nation's goal of achieving "Indonesia Emas 2045." Focusing on tourism, Tanjung Kelayang SEZ has positively impacted various industries, including UMKM, service businesses, creative economies, and has expanded employment prospects for the local population. Positioned as a shining example of the Blue Economy concept, Belitung Island exemplifies economic synergy based on sustainable marine products and activities, contributing to Indonesia's vision of becoming "Golden Indonesia 2045.
