The Ministry of Coordinating Economic Affairs (Kemenko Perekonomian) is fervently advocating and aiming for 30 million micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (UMKM) to embrace digitalization by 2024, expressing optimism toward this goal. Presently, the realization stands at 27 million UMKM. Rudy Salahuddin, Deputy of Digital Economic, Manpower, and UMKM Coordination in Kemenko Economic Affairs, expressed ongoing efforts in educating and enhancing digital literacy among UMKM to facilitate their entry into the digital market. During the Media Briefing for the Launch of the National White Paper on Digital Economic Development Strategy at the Kemenko Economic Affairs Office in Jakarta on Monday (4/12/2023), he highlighted, "So, out of the 30 million target for 2024, we're aiming for UMKM to go digital. We are optimistic about achieving this, not solely relying on the government, but also through synergies with industry players."
The initiative does not solely focus on encouraging UMKM to go digital but also ensuring the marketability of their products globally, particularly within the ASEAN region. There is a concerted effort to bolster production capabilities to meet the demands of a digital marketplace. Rudy emphasized, "It's not just about going digital; their products must also sell. The aim is to nurture these products to become champions that are highly marketable." The emphasis is to initially promote UMKM (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) products within ASEAN, hoping that among the 30 million digitally engaged UMKM, there will emerge 'UMKM champions.' Consequently, the government is strengthening collaborations with various electronic commerce (e-commerce) platforms and financial technology (fintech) companies to achieve this target. These collaborations are geared towards enhancing the competitiveness of UMKM in entering the digital ecosystem and international markets. Rudy concluded by stating, "We are working in synergy with industry players, such as e-commerce and fintech entities, to collectively encourage UMKM to go digital." This collaborative effort aims to elevate UMKM capacity and competitiveness in digital platforms and international market spaces.
