Indonesia and China's Mutually Beneficial Industries

The 3rd Overseas Chinese Trade Fair (OCTF) (Jakarta) Intelligent Technology Exhibition opened at JIEXPO, Jakarta, inaugurated by Deputy Minister of Trade Jerry Sambuaga on Tuesday (28/11). The exhibition's theme, "Technology Changes Lifestyle, Innovation Leads the Future," emphasizes the pivotal role of technology in shaping lifestyles and driving future innovation. The exhibition aims to intensify global intelligent technology exchanges, project collaborations, and product trade.. Deputy Minister Jerry highlighted the complementary nature of Indonesia and China's industries. Indonesian exports to China have significantly supported Chinese industries in producing various products sold globally. Moreover, the increasing number of Chinese companies investing in Indonesia reflects the mutual collaboration. The Ministry of Trade notes a positive trend in Indonesia-China trade relations, with a 29.57% positive export trend from Indonesia to China over the last five years (2018-2022). Key Indonesian exports to China in 2023 include alloy steel/ferro alloys (USD 9.50 billion), lignite (USD 5.41 billion), and coal (USD 2.95 billion).

The annual growth rate of Indonesia's non-oil and gas exports from 2018 to 2022 was 14.99%. As of October this year, Indonesia's major trading partners are China, the United States, India, Japan, and the Philippines. Key non-oil and gas exports from Indonesia to the world include coal, vegetable oil, alloy steel, bituminous coal, lignite, copper ore, jewelry, nickel, palm oil, and pulp. Following President Joko Widodo's recent visit to China, a business meeting between Indonesia and China resulted in 11 business agreements totaling USD 12.55 billion in priority sectors such as energy, batteries, steel industry, data and technology, and health. Chinese investment in Indonesia in 2022 reached USD 8.2 billion, a 156% increase compared to 2021. Deputy Minister Jerry highlighted specific collaborations, including the "Two Countries, Twin Parks" project, aims to expedite trade and investment between both nations. Additionally, bilateral collaborations in tourism, education, culture, youth, and sports aim to enhance cultural exchanges and societal interactions, further strengthening the relationship. Concerning ASEAN, Deputy Minister Jerry emphasized the encouragement of increased collaboration in the ASEAN-China Free Trade Area and potential collaborations, particularly in the digital economy. Both parties recognized the importance of enhancing cooperation in digital economy-related matters, particularly through capacity-building activities. The ASEAN-China Center actively aligns Belt and Road Initiative collaborations with ASEAN's regional and national development strategies.
