Indonesian Ministry of Industry Highlights Jewelry Industry as a Key ASEAN Sector

The Balai Besar Standardisasi dan Pelayanan Jasa Industri Kerajinan dan Batik (BBSPJIKB) of the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) underscores the jewelry industry as a strategic sector for the economies of Indonesia and other ASEAN countries. The Acting Head of BBSPJIKB, Hagung Eko Pawowo, revealed that the total demand for jewellery across ASEAN countries in 2022 reached 77.8 tons, tripling the demand in Hong Kong, which stood at 22.4 tons. Eko Pawowo noted the longstanding development of the jewellery industry in ASEAN countries, particularly in Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia, where skilled artisans and a rich history contribute to the sector's growth. Despite this, the jewellery industry, predominantly led by small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in ASEAN, faces global challenges related to human resource development in design and marketing.

To address these challenges, the BBSPJIKB, in collaboration with the ASEAN Free Trade Area, organised the "Training on Jewellery Design and Marketing For SMEs In The Jewellery Sector" and "Comprehensive Mapping for Industrial Jewelry in ASEAN." The training, taking place in Yogyakarta from November 20 to 27, 2023, attracts 22 participants from ASEAN member states, excluding Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, and Vietnam. Eko Pawowo emphasised that the training aligns with the ECOTECH Work Programme, focusing on providing capacity-building training and cooperation to assist ASEAN member economies in leveraging benefits from global trade. The program aims to enhance institutional and personal capacities in line with the economic potential of each country. The Ministry anticipates that this initiative will contribute significantly to the rejuvenation of the jewellery trade and investment in the post-pandemic era. Additionally, considering Hong Kong's role as an international product hub in Asia, the program presents a substantial opportunity to market Indonesian jewellery products globally. The Ministry envisions this program as a progressive step in revitalising the jewellery trade, fostering collaboration, and positioning Indonesia prominently in the global jewellery market.
