Aceh Exports Palm Kernel Shells to Hokkaido City

The General Manager of PT Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) I Lhokseumawe, Joni Hutama, shared that the port in Krueng Geukeuh, North Aceh, is gaining momentum in import-export activities. "Our port is becoming active with the export of palm kernel shells to Hokkaido City, Japan," stated Joni Hutama on Thursday, November 9, 2023.  Since January, there have been 8 foreign-flagged vessels transporting palm kernel shells to Japan, with an average cargo capacity of 11,000 tons per ship. The MV. Sun Brave Singapore, measuring 127 meters in length and weighing 9,976 GT, is one such vessel involved in transporting the Aceh-origin palm kernel shells to Japan directly, without any transshipment. "These palm kernel shells will be utilized as a fuel source for power generation in Japan. Aceh has around 60 Palm Oil Mills (POMs)," he explained.

Joni Hutama pointed out that the palm kernel shell exports are managed by PT Biomas Andalan Indonesia Kharisma (BAIK). The palm kernel shells are gathered from POMs located in Aceh Province. Additionally, he encouraged Aceh entrepreneurs engaged in export to utilize the Krueng Geukeuh port for their export activities. "In terms of port facilities, we are fully equipped with supportive infrastructure. Essentially, we are ready to cater to investors and import-export operations with the current condition of the port," he emphasized. The Krueng Geukeuh port features a 268-meter-long dock with a depth of 10 meters. It serves as a feeder port connected to the Belawan Port in North Sumatra. Historically, the port dates back to the 7th century, coinciding with the advent of Islam in Sumatra. It held significance in the trade within the Malacca Strait region."
