Mimika's Sea Shrimp Exports Yield IDR 1.4 Billion in a Month

Apart from mining, Mimika Regency has multiple sources of generating regional income (PAD). One of these is fisheries, specifically sea shrimp. The sea shrimp from Mimika are exported to various destinations, including the United States, Europe, and Japan. The Coordinator of Coastal Shrimp Fishermen, Rahman, stated that during October 2023, fishermen from Pulau Akar under the supervision of PT. Bartuh Langgeng Abadi (BLA) caught 45 tons of sea shrimp, resulting in earnings of IDR 1.4 billion. "Today, we (Pulau Akar fishermen and entrepreneurs) paid fees to the fisheries department for our catch as a commitment to pay the Fish Certificate (SKI)," he said in Timika on Monday, October 30, 2023. He explained that in Akar, shrimp catching activities only occur for one day due to the proximity of the catching site and the use of vessels with a capacity of only 2 gross tons (GT). Additionally, fishermen employ a three-layered net.

In Mimika, shrimp catches have an established supply chain with several companies, including PT BLA, a frozen product processing company that directly sources its commodities from nature. PT BLA collaborates with native Papuan entrepreneurs to harness the shrimp potential in Timika. "Timika's sea shrimp contributed more than half a million USD dollars in foreign exchange in 2022. This year, we aim to reach 1 million USD dollars or approximately IDR 15 billion," he added. The shrimp is marketed both domestically and internationally. However, maintaining the quality of shrimp handling to keep them in good condition is no easy task for companies, especially as consumers are becoming more selective about the products they choose. They not only consider the quality and cleanliness of products but also the environmental-friendliness of the products they consume. Environmentally friendly products are those that focus on sustainable environmental management. For instance, environmentally friendly shrimp products involve using eco-friendly equipment during shrimp catching that does not harm the shrimp's habitat. "Therefore, we hope the government and all government stakeholders will continue to ensure the sustainability of coastal economic potential," he stated. The Head of the Mimika Fisheries Office, Anton Welerubun, expressed pride in the honesty and sincerity of both shrimp exporters and fishermen. Due to the excellent potential of shrimp, the authorities continually urge entrepreneurs and catchers to coordinate with the local community.
