Indonesia Holds Significant Potential for Motorcycle Exports to Africa

Indonesia has a substantial opportunity to expand its motorcycle exports, particularly to the African region, driven by the commendable quality of products manufactured in the country. The Secretary-General of the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association (AISI), conveyed this view. The primary potential lies in Africa, Southern Europe, and Latin America. Even in our proximity, within ASEAN and South Asia, there is considerable potential. For this year, AISI aims to export around 550,000 motorcycle units. However, he expressed that this target could be exceeded with more significant government support for the two-wheeler industry. He stated that Indonesia currently holds the third position in the motorcycle industry, trailing behind India and China. Undoubtedly, if Indonesia are the third, below India and China, our competitiveness will be robust. This is an opportunity that we can capitalise on with all stakeholders.

The fact remains that Indonesia witnessed a decrease in motorcycle exports, primarily because numerous countries opted to export components from Indonesia to assemble in their own nations. Alongside this, differing standards in each country posed additional challenges. Hence, he revealed that AISI and the government are actively working on aligning these standards to facilitate the smoother marketing of motorcycles originating from Indonesia. The real hindrance to exports is its standards. There are Euro standards, for example, and we are striving to harmonise these with our national standards.
