The Ministry of Law and Human Rights of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenkumham RI) issued a geographical indication certificate for Mount Kelir Robusta coffee in the Jambu District of Semarang Regency on Saturday, October 14, 2023. The issuance of this certificate brings great joy to coffee farmers in the Mount Kelir region as it will expand the marketing of Robusta coffee locally and reach the global market. The certificate was presented over the weekend by a representative of the Central Java Regional Office of Kemenkumham to the Regent of Semarang during the Agro Festival Exhibition. At the time, the Regent of Semarang was accompanied by the Vice Regent of Semarang, the Head of the Department of Agriculture and Plantation of Central Java Province, and the Chairman of the Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD) of Semarang Regency.
The Head of the Coffee and Cocoa Research Center (Puslitkoka) of Indonesia, stated that the potential of Robusta coffee in Indonesia is very unique, especially in the Semarang Regency, particularly in the Mount Kelir area of the Jambu District. The taste of Robusta in Indonesia is very unique in each region. While Robusta coffee is often associated with coffee from Brazil, Robusta coffee in Indonesia competes favourably in the global Robusta coffee market. In reality, Indonesian Robusta coffee can compete with Robusta coffee from other regions. The issuance of the geographical indication certificate to the community also serves as a form of protection for the geographical indication of Mount Kelir Robusta coffee. The hope is that the local Robusta coffee farmers in the Mount Kelir area will utilise this certificate to expand their market reach. Regent of Semarang, hopes that the coffee produced by farmers in the Mount Kelir region can flood the global coffee market. Thus, the unique flavour of local Robusta coffee can be marketed extensively. The geographical indication certificate is one of the prerequisites for entering the export market. The unique flavour of Robusta coffee from the Mount Kelir region is an asset for selling abroad.
