Indonesian Arabica Coffee Exported to Turkey

The Association of Indonesian Coffee Exporters and Industries (AEKI) DKI Jakarta, also known as Desa Sejahtera Astra (DSA) AEKI, in collaboration with Environmental and Social Responsibility (ESR) PT. Astra Internasional, has facilitated a development program for the Paseban Mandiri Farmer Group to export Arabica coffee from Bogor to Turkey. Bogor is already renowned for its Robusta coffee production and is known as the top Robusta coffee producer in Indonesia. Nevertheless, coffee farmers in Bogor remain enthusiastic about producing the finest Arabica coffee. AEKI participates in Astra's development program, which focuses on empowering village economic products. As a facilitator, DSA AEKI collaborates with the Department of Food Crops, Horticulture, and Plantation (Distanhorbun) of Bogor Regency as stated by AEKI's Organization and Development Manager. The development of Arabica coffee involves not only providing fertilizer and planting equipment but also educating farmer groups through mentoring and field training. Farmers are educated on how to cultivate the best-quality Arabica coffee, from planting and maintenance to proper harvesting. This comprehensive process leads to improved income for the farmers.

The mentoring provided to coffee farmers covers everything from the picking process to post-harvest and marketing. With proper coffee cultivation techniques, the quality and value of the coffee increase, affecting its price. Arabica coffee was chosen over Robusta because there are not many Bogor farmers who prioritize Arabica as their primary commodity. DSA AEKI has entered the upstream coffee business and aims to develop Arabica coffee production in Bogor, West Java, along with farmer groups in the village's gardens, which have mainly produced Robusta coffee. Bogor's Arabica coffee has a high-quality taste and aroma, on par with Arabica coffee from other Indonesian regions. After a year of successfully harvesting high-quality coffee, DSA AEKI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Turkish buyer who visited to observe the coffee processing in the Cikoneng village garden area. Not only Turkey but also Bogor's Arabica coffee farmers have participated in various international festivals, including those in France and the Amsterdam Coffee Festival. With high international market interest in Bogor coffee, Distanhorbun is developing an intensification program to increase the Arabica coffee plant population. Dead plants will be replaced by new productive ones. In addition to providing seedlings, fertilization assistance, and farmer school mentoring.
