Ministry of Industry Aims to Transform Batik into an Environmentally Friendly Industry

Reni Yanita, the Director-General of Small and Medium Industries and Various Industries at the Ministry of Industry, aims to make Indonesia's batik industry environmentally friendly by adopting technology improvements and utilizing natural dyes. She envisions branding batik as an eco-conscious industry, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices. Reni also highlights the importance of waste management in batik production, particularly the proper disposal of leftover wax, to reduce environmental pollution. However, she recognizes that achieving this goal requires collaboration and awareness from both the community and batik entrepreneurs. Partnerships with organizations like the Batik Foundation and the Batik Museum are essential for preserving Indonesia's batik heritage.

The Ministry of Industry has been supporting batik centers across the country to empower artisans, create job opportunities, and ensure a decent livelihood for them. Reni encourages batik artisans and entrepreneurs to adapt to the preferences of today's millennial generation by offering affordable batik products made from comfortable and breathable cotton materials. This approach aims to make batik more appealing to younger consumers while maintaining the cultural significance of this traditional Indonesian art form. The ministry also emphasizes the protection of batik motifs, with four regions in Indonesia currently recognized for their unique batik patterns, and hopes to see further geographical indications established to safeguard this cultural heritage.
