Minister of Trade Supports Indonesia's Drug Raw Material Independence

Indonesia's Minister of Trade, Zulkifli Hasan, has voiced strong support for the country's pursuit of self-sufficiency in pharmaceutical and bio-pharmaceutical raw materials. This initiative aims to enhance Indonesia's healthcare industry's resilience and reduce its reliance on imports from other nations. Minister Hasan highlighted his endorsement during a visit by the Bio-Pharmaceutical and Drug Raw Material Association (AB3O) to the Ministry of Trade office in Jakarta. The AB3O delegation, led by FX Sudirman, explored avenues of cooperation with the Indian vaccine industry to bolster bio-pharmaceutical and drug material production within Indonesia. Minister Hasan emphasized the Ministry's full backing for the development of the local bio-pharmaceutical and drug raw material sector and pledged coordination with relevant institutions to facilitate these efforts.

The move towards self-reliance in pharmaceutical raw materials is of significant importance for Indonesia's healthcare industry, as it strives to reduce its dependency on imports and enhance its capacity to meet domestic demand. Notably, Indonesia has put regulations in place to govern the importation of specific pharmaceutical raw materials, which require importers to hold valid Business Identification Numbers (NIBs) serving as Importer Identification Numbers (APIs) and Business Licensing from the Ministry of Trade. This proactive approach underscores the country's commitment to ensuring the availability of essential medical supplies while promoting local production and self-sufficiency in the pharmaceutical sector.
