Mangosteen (garcinia mangostana) cultivated by farmers in Lebak Regency, Banten, is now being exported to international markets through a Jakarta-based company. The exported mangosteen comes from approximately 40 hectares harvested from August to September 2023 as stated by Chairman of the National Farmers and Fishermen Contact (KTNA) in Cipanas, Lebak Regency, during the Farmer, Livestock, and Fishermen Jamboree in Rangkasbitung, Banten. Lebak Regency is the largest mangosteen producer in Banten Province. Community-owned plantations spanning thousands of hectares are scattered across several districts. Most of these farmers cultivate mangosteen at altitudes of over 1,000 meters above sea level. The mangosteen production in the Cipanas region reaches around 60 tons and has been sent abroad as a new Indonesian export commodity. Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea are among the importing countries. The exported mangosteen is distributed in its whole form, unpeeled.
In addition to the export market, mangosteen sales from Lebak also meet domestic demands in places like Bogor, Tangerang, and Jakarta. Currently, the price of mangosteen at the farmer level ranges from IDR 25,000 to IDR 30,000 per kilogram. With export sales, farmers can sell mangosteen for up to IDR 50,000 per kilogram. Cipanas mangosteen, characterized by its purple color, is of high quality and has a sweet and sour taste, with each fruit weighing between 120 to 150 grams. Currently, mangosteen plants are relatively healthy and not affected by various pests and diseases, so this year's harvest is expected to be better than the previous year. The production of mangosteen cultivated by Lebak farmers for export can reach 150 tons from various areas such as Cipanas, Sobang, Cibeber, and Lebakgedong through exporters from Tasikmalaya and Jakarta. Local authorities continue to improve the quality and productivity of mangosteen to meet international market demand.
