The Ministry of Trade Facilitates Expanded Export Access for Regions to Non-Traditional Countries

The Ministry of Trade is actively promoting exports to non-traditional markets as a strategy to bolster the trade balance. This effort involves international trade cooperation mechanisms and the expansion of exports into new markets. The Head of the Trade Policy Board at the Ministry of Trade, stated that in 2022 and 2023, East Kalimantan ranked as the second-largest contributing province to Indonesia's non-oil and gas export growth. The establishment of the National Capital in this province has the potential to drive greater foreign trade performance in the future. The government is vigilantly addressing several challenges in national trade, which have contributed to the slowdown of the global economy in 2023. One of these challenges is trade barriers in Indonesia's export destination countries. International trade cooperation can serve as a solution to facilitate the resolution of trade barriers between Indonesia and its partner countries.

The Ministry of Trade has various strategies for foreign trade, including boosting exports of manufactured products and participating in the global value chain. Amid global uncertainties, Indonesia's economic growth remains stable, even reaching 5.17% in the second quarter of 2023. Furthermore, the annual inflation rate in August 2023 stood at 3.27%, relatively lower compared to other countries. In the same context, Haemusri, the Head of the Balikpapan City Trade Office, highlighted that the central government is seriously focusing on regional export markets through policies that encourage market access expansion. Business actors need to be aware of non-traditional markets that are a central focus of the central government as export opportunities to be optimized, so that we don't become overly reliant on the same export markets. It is worth noting that several other macroeconomic indicators also demonstrate positive growth, such as Indonesia's trade balance, which recorded a surplus of USD 24.34 billion in January to August 2023.
