Abruzzo's Export Sees Growth Again in the First Half of 2023

In the first half of 2023, according to a study conducted for CNA Abruzzo by Aldo Ronci using Istat and Coeweb data, exports from the Abruzzo region in Italy increased by 550 million euros compared to the same period the previous year. This represents a remarkable 12.1% growth, triple the national average (4.2%). As a result, Abruzzo secured the fourth position among Italian regions in terms of export growth.

This impressive export performance can be attributed to a combination of various factors. While in previous years, the transportation sector in the Val di Sangro area was a major contributor to export growth, its influence has lessened, with only a 5.3% increase (EUR 69 million), compared to the national average of 25.9%. Conversely, the export growth generated by companies producing parts and accessories for vehicles and engines was exceptionally high, with a growth of EUR 130 million (30.8%), triple the Italian average of 10.5%.

Among the provinces in Abruzzo, Teramo achieved the highest relative export growth during the considered period. This growth was spread across multiple sectors, including pharmaceuticals (+142.5%), textiles and clothing (+27.3%), food (+32.7%), and vehicle accessories (+52.5%). However, significant variations in export growth were also observed in the provinces of L'Aquila (+18.1%), Pescara (+11.6%), and Chieti (+8.3%). Despite these positive trends, there remains room for improvement in supporting non-transportation-related exports, as these continue to lag behind the national average, highlighting the need for targeted public interventions to enhance international market access, technological innovation, and credit support for regional businesses. Additionally, the study notes that key Abruzzo food products, including pasta, wine, and oil, outperformed the national average, contributing to the region's export growth.
