Bali's Tuna Thrives In The Global Market, With US As The Largest Market

Bali, a province renowned for its natural beauty and culture, has demonstrated significant potential in the field of fisheries. This was evidenced by the export realisation of tuna from Bali in the first semester of 2023, reaching IDR 502.2 billion. The export of Bali's tuna is predominantly directed towards the United States, accounting for 2,827 tons or 46% of the total volume, with a value of IDR 363 billion. Australia follows with an import of 213 tons of Balinese tuna, valued at IDR 39 billion, while Japan imports 753 tons with an export value of IDR 34.2 billion. Other countries collectively import 886 tons, amounting to IDR 65.8 billion. Although the export realisation of Balinese tuna in the first semester of 2023 was lower compared to the same period in 2022, which reached IDR 630 billion, a total export volume of 4,679 tons was recorded during the first six months of 2023. This marks a decline from the 6,590 tons exported during the same period in 2022.

Nevertheless, the Acting Head of the Bali Fish Quarantine, Quality Control, and Safety of Fisheries Products (BKIPM), remains optimistic that Bali's tuna exports will continue to rise in the future. According to him, this optimism is rooted in the consistent high demand in the market. Furthermore, the direct flight routes and interconnected flights between countries from Bali facilitate the distribution of tuna exports. Bali's tuna has become one of Indonesia's leading export commodities. With its considerable potential and support from various stakeholders, Bali's tuna exports are expected to increase further in the future.

However, the BKIPM in Denpasar does not specify the breakdown of realisations based on the type of tuna because four types of tuna are caught in the southern waters of Bali and pass through the Benoa Port in Denpasar, Bali. These include bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, albacore tuna, and bigeye tuna. Direct flight routes and interconnected flights between countries from Bali facilitate the distribution of tuna exports, including those destined for the US. Air access is a crucial factor in absorbing tuna exports from Bali. During 2022, the tuna export traffic from Bali reached 13,660 tons, with exports valued at IDR 1.27 trillion. This marked a 15% increase compared to the IDR 1.11 trillion achieved in 2021. The US was the primary destination for Bali's tuna exports in 2022, importing 6,713 tons with an export value of IDR 841.8 billion. Thailand and Australia imported 3,086 tons and 536 tons, respectively.
