The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has stated that its seafood products exported to the European Union are sourced from sustainable fishing and aquaculture practices. The country's fisheries are guided by the Sustainable Blue Economy policy, which includes implementing a quota-based approach to fishing to address overfishing and ecosystem damage. The Ministry is committed to balancing ecology and the economy while responding to challenges to enter the global market, particularly the EU, which has stringent sustainability and non-illegal fishing requirements. To support sustainable seafood, the Ministry has partnered with GSSI-UNIDO's SeafoodMAP digital platform to connect businesses committed to sustainable products.
At the Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona, the Ministry showcased 11 Indonesian seafood exporters under the tagline "Indonesia Seafood: Naturally Diverse" and hopes to expand its market share in the EU by complying with quality and safety requirements. The Ministry's five priorities include measured fishing and increasing marine conservation areas.
