The government of Sorong Regency in Southwest Papua Province is planning to activate the Mariat Market in Marait District to boost the area's economic growth. According to the acting Regent of Sorong, Yan Piet Mosso, the position of Mariat Market is very strategic and needs to be reactivated as a centre for buying and selling transactions and will support an increase in the local economy. Mosso stated that all supporting facilities at Mariat Market, including roads, market buildings, and other facilities, have been or are currently being renovated.
The market is expected to be operational this year, and once it's reactivated, the growth of the local economy is expected to increase. Additionally, a transportation terminal will be built at the Mariat Market to arrange the city and intercity transport routes. The aim is to direct transportation services to the market to keep money circulating within the Sorong Regency area and prevent it from flowing out to other regions.
