Indonesia's completely built-up (CBU) motor vehicle exports experienced a rapid growth of 39.9% in the first quarter of 2023, according to data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), with 133,928 units shipped compared to 95,720 units in the same period last year. Domestic sales also increased by 7% to 282,125 units. These results are in line with a 5.7% increase in production after being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, exports of completely knocked down (CKD) vehicles decreased by 30% from the first quarter of 2022 to 14,755 set units. Daihatsu-Toyota was still the main contributor to vehicle exports from Indonesia, with 35.6% of total CBU exports, while Mitsubishi Motors dominated CKD exports with 57.7% of total CKD vehicle exports. Toyota was very active and dominant in exporting certain components to destination countries.
