The Indonesian government aims to produce 2 million tons of shrimp by 2024. To achieve this, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has implemented three strategic steps. These include evaluating shrimp cultivation areas, revitalizing traditional shrimp ponds to increase productivity, and building modern integrated shrimp farming areas through modeling and community-private sector partnerships.
Revitalization efforts will be carried out in various areas in 2023, with the aim of transforming traditional shrimp ponds into semi-intensive ponds with increased productivity. This includes creating separate inlet and outlet channels, implementing water reservoirs and wastewater treatment facilities, increasing stocking density, managing shrimp health, and mechanization. Additionally, modeling and building integrated shrimp farming areas are expected to bring multiple benefits, such as improving farmers' welfare, increasing revenues, ensuring food security, boosting foreign exchange earnings, creating employment opportunities, and generating multiplier effects.
