Indonesian Fisheries Support Measured Fishing Program

PT Perikanan Indonesia (Persero) fully supports the measurable fishing program that was recently issued by the government through PP No 11/2023. The regulation is intended to ensure the sustainability of fish resources is maintained and can provide welfare for fishermen. This policy is also able to provide expansion and employment opportunities, increase added value and competitiveness of fishery products, business certainty, and contribution to the business world. Main Director of Indonesian Fisheries Sigit Muhartono said, as a business entity in the fisheries sector, Indonesian Fisheries welcomed the issuance of this regulation.
The Measured Fishing Regulation regulates fishing quotas in 6 zones of the Republic of Indonesia's Fisheries Management Area (WPPNRI) which are divided into industrial quotas, local fishermen quotas, and non-commercial activity quotas. Business entities that are legal entities with domestic and foreign investment can take advantage of industrial quotas in the three available zones. Zone 01 includes WPPNRI 711 (waters of the Karimata Strait, Natuna Sea and North Natuna Sea); Zone 02 includes WPPNRI 716 (waters of the Sulawesi Sea and north of Halmahera Island), and WPPNRI 717 (waters of Cendrawasih Bay and the High Seas of the Pacific Ocean); and Zone 03 covering WPPNRI 715 (waters of Tomini Bay, Maluku Sea, Halmahera Sea, Seram Sea, and Berau Bay), WPPNRI 718 (waters of the Aru Sea, Arafuru Sea, and the eastern part of the Timor Sea), and WPPNRI 714 (waters of Tolo Bay and Banda Sea).

Sigit revealed that his party would utilize fishing in the zone using existing vessels owned by the company. Indonesian Fisheries will also partner with ship owners as strategic partners to participate in measured fishing. "This program will be a golden opportunity for BUMN Fisheries to contribute more to fishing and the welfare of fishermen," he said in a press release received by KONTAN, Thursday (9/3). Furthermore, Indonesian Fisheries has set a target of 350,000 tons in the next 5 years through this measurable fishing program. Indonesian Fisheries will maximize fish catches in the WPPNRI area through branch offices as the basis for fishing. Indonesian fisheries will focus on catching 7 main fishery commodities, including cob, skipjack, tuna, kite, mackerel, mackerel, and cephalopod (octopus, squid, cuttlefish).
Previously, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries of the Republic of Indonesia, Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, said that the quota-based measured fishing policy had 3 main targets, namely legal fishing, reported fishing, and regulated fishing. It is hoped that there will be upstream to downstream activities that are quality guaranteed and competitive, a good catch data collection system, equitable economic distribution, and an easy fishery product traceability process.
