Italy hit all targets for 2021 and 2022 set out in the EU-funded post-COVID National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP), Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti told the Senate Budget Committee Tuesday.
"This amounts to 151 out of the total of 527 targets set out in the NRRP through 2026", the deadline for the plan to be enacted, he said.
This year Italy must meet 96 targets of which 27 in the first half of the year and 69 in the second, the minister added.
To date, Italy has received in total 66,9 billion euros in two installments to implement the plan.
Giorgetti said the European Commission is assessing a request for a third installment worth approximately 19 billion euros, payment of which is expected in May.
Taking questions from senators, the minister also said discussing the possibility of overshooting the 2026 deadline "would not break a taboo".
"Compared to when the plan was drafted, the entire economic system, not only in Europe, has gone haywire" and "the initial conditions have now been turned totally upside down," Giorgetti explained.
"But today our committment is to meet all the targets we have set for ourselves," he continued, adding that the NRRP governance system "has been revised and enhanced" to strengthen the oversight and monitoring of target deadlines in consideration of the challenges.
