Together with KEMITRAAN, the Ministry of Home Affairs Encourages Sustainable Development in the Land of Papua

Deputy Minister of Home Affairs (Wamendagri) John Wempi Wetipo directly opened an interactive meeting entitled "Encouraging the Institutionalization of Sustainable Development in Papua" which was held by the Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Partnership for Governance Reform (KEMITRAAN).

In the meeting, Wempi said that sustainable development is a global issue that is conceptually much needed for present and future generations. Sustainable development is expected to balance social, economic and environmental development simultaneously.

“This means that it is sustainable for future generations, not just building roads. Now I think with this PARTNERSHIP how to build collaboration between ministries and institutions. Even the Ministry of Home Affairs can't," he said at the Wyndham Hotel Jakarta, Tuesday (28/2/2023).

Wempi explained that the implementation of the concept of sustainable development in Indonesia has been spelled out in Law (UU) Number 32 of 2009 concerning the Protection and Management of the Environment and Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 111 of 2022 concerning Implementation of Achieving Sustainable Development Goals. These two regulations serve as guidelines for the central government and local governments in environmental management and sustainable development.

"This is our joint duty and responsibility, not only the government but all of us, we have a responsibility. How will this mission happen in the future, overseeing the development process in the future better, "Wempi said.

Even so, it needs to be acknowledged that development in the Papua region has so far experienced several obstacles, such as ineffective inter-agency coordination. To overcome this, the government formed the Steering Committee for the Acceleration of Development of Special Autonomy in Papua (BP3OKP) which is tasked with synchronizing, harmonization, evaluation and coordination.

"For the development process that we hope for, there is the formation of a special agency in Papua, namely BP3OKP. The chairperson is Mr. Vice President, we have held several meetings on how to accelerate prosperity in Papua, this can be realized soon, "he explained.

On the other hand, KEMITRAAN Executive Director Laode M. Syarif hopes that development in Papua will not cause environmental damage as has happened in other regions. Therefore, he emphasized that such mistakes should not be repeated.

He also hopes that the development model in Papua can encourage nature conservation by taking into account environmental connectivity and low-carbon development. He said several international meetings that discussed carbon issues needed to be followed up in an effort to protect nature which is expected to also have an impact on people's welfare.

"So that low-carbon development in Papua can really be realized," he said.
