The Ministry of SOEs Encourages Coffee Farmer Capacity with the Prosperous Program Scheme

The Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) is committed to increasing the capacity of coffee farmers in Indonesia to encourage quality production. This is done by replicating the coffee business model with the Makmur program scheme in several regions in Indonesia. In an effort to increase coffee production in Indonesia, the synergy of SOEs through the PMO Kopi Nusantara initiative will increase the total area of coffee plantations which are the implementation areas for the Makmur Kopi program in five regions. The five regions cover East Java, Central Java, West Java, Southern Sumatra, and Northern Sumatra. By increasing the land area, it is hoped that the replication of the business model, one of the objectives of which is to increase land productivity, can be carried out massively in other locations. Productivity increase will be carried out from three sides, namely increasing quantity, strengthening quality, and developing farmers' adaptation to climate. It is hoped that by expanding access to agro-inputs, financing, mentoring, and marketing, this productivity increase target can be achieved. "If we look at the coffee productivity of the people in Indonesia who have not been able to compete with neighboring countries, it could be the impact of coffee cultivation which has not become the main commodity for farmers," said Dwi Sutoro, Marketing Director of Nusantara Plantation Holding who was appointed by Minister Erick Thohir to be the initiator. Project Management Officer (PMO) of Nusantara Coffee.

"One of the initiatives we are currently carrying out is to encourage farmers to focus on cultivating coffee as a livelihood that can improve the standard of living of their families," he added. The demand for coffee around the world continues to increase every year, but Indonesia continues to be overtaken by Vietnam and Colombia in terms of coffee production and exports. "Indonesia's role as the fourth largest coffee producer in the world is quite significant in the global market. In addition to increasing productivity, the Makmur Kopi program initiative also needs to provide added value in the coffee value chain so that we can catch up with Indonesia on world commodity exchanges," said Reynaldi Istanto, Expert Staff for the Minister of BUMN for Global Value Chains. The Ministry of BUMN hopes that the implementation of the Makmur Kopi program by PMO Kopi Nusantara can advance the coffee industry in Indonesia and improve the welfare of coffee farmers.
