Jokowi Says Electric Cars Made in Indonesia Will Be Massive

Indonesian President JokoWidodo (Jokowi) is optimistic that the acceleration program for battery-based electric motorized vehicles (KBLBB) in the country can be realized according to the road map that has been determined. Thus, in two or three years, domestically produced electric cars will begin to appear massively, ranging from affordable ones to advanced technology. This was said when he briefed the participants of the LXII Regular Education Program (PPRA) and the XXIII Forces Short Education Program (PPSA), the Indonesian National Resilience Institute, Wednesday (10/13/2021).

To realize this, the development of downstream nickel products must continue to be considered. Then, investors or state-owned enterprises (BUMN) should also be encouraged to establish a processing industry in Indonesia. "We stop the export of raw materials and force, whether state-owned enterprises, our private sector, or investors, to establish their industry in the country. Later, ladies and gentlemen, you can see in two or three years that electric cars are starting to emerge from our country," said Jokowi.

In the future, the government also wants to integrate Krakatau Steel with the lithium battery industry, nickel derivative industry, and automotive. Because, currently Krakatau Steel already has a Hot Strip Mill Factory. "Those who can produce thin sheets for the car body. Previously it was only for the chassis, now it can be used for the car body. I just made it official last month," said Jokowi. In the long term, Indonesia must produce products with high added value. The process combines the use of natural resources and technology that preserves it. The principle of a sustainable economy, said Jokowi, must really be maintained. "We stick to it, namely through the green economy and the blue economy. We must encourage downstream commodities," he said.
