Indonesia will become Chair of ASEAN in 2023

JAKARTA - Indonesia will again become chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2023. Previously, Indonesia has been the Chair of ASEAN three times.

During his tenure at that time, various big ideas were born that became the landscape for ASEAN cooperation. So in his fourth leadership, it is hoped that big ideas will be born again in order to strengthen Asean, both for member countries and dialogue partners.

"At Chairmanship in 2023, Indonesia must again be able to answer the challenges and needs of the world, especially in the midst of the hard work of the world economy to recover from the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. So, efforts to recover the economy will still be the main issue, including the prediction that the economic dynamics in 2023 will still be overshadowed by the impact of the pandemic, "Rizal said in a press release received on Monday (3/5).

He also underlined the synergy between Indonesia's Chairmanship in ASEAN and various international forums such as the G-20 and the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). "Priority synergy is the key word to ensure that Indonesia's interests can be realized in ASEAN, APEC and the G-20. Active involvement in these forums is none other than to support the government's efforts in realizing economic growth, "he said.

In order to strengthen and sharpen the theme of Indonesia's Chairmanship, especially in the economic sector, a Forum Group Discussion (FGD) was held which was a continuation of the first (10 September 2020) and the second (17 December 2020) FGDs. The FGD presented three speakers, namely Ambassador (Ambassador) of the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Indonesia (PTRI) to ASEAN Ade Padmo Sarwono, Rector of Gadjah Mada University (UGM) Panut Mulyono, and Executive Director of The Habibie Center (THC) Hadi Kuntjara, and Assistant Deputy for Cooperation Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Regional and Sub-Regional Economics Netty Muharni as moderator.

The five areas of Priority Economic Deliverables (PED) were discussed, namely economic recovery, sustainability, resilience, inclusiveness, and digital economy. Several PED proposals have Indonesian characteristics, such as Blue & Green Economy, Tourism, Vocational, Digitalization, Connectivity, MSMEs, Creative Economy and Science and Technology.

At the end of the meeting, it is hoped that there will be a need to discuss the PED proposal. This hope is conveyed so that Indonesia's Chairmanship in ASEAN in 2023 can increase national and regional economic interests.
