Indonesia's Manufacturing Index Rises to Level 51.3 in December 2020

The Minister of Industry (Menperin), Agung Gumiwang Kartasasmita, confirmed that the activities of the domestic manufacturing industry showed a brilliant performance in the last month of 2020. Even though they are still under heavy pressure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the domestic manufacturing industry continues to strive to rise to the next expansive phase.
According to him, this was reflected in the Indonesian Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) in December 2020 which was recorded at the level of 51.3. Or an increase compared to the previous month's achievement which was in the position of 50.6. “This is an extraordinary achievement, I am grateful to industry players who are still trying their best to optimize existing resources amidst existing limitations. This also shows that the Ministry of Industry's policy steps are able to encourage this," said Minister of Industry Agus in Jakarta, Monday (4/1).

Minister of Industry Agus revealed that the increase in this index was supported by the growth of new orders, which refers to a solid expansion in output. "This increase is the second fastest in the history of the survey for nearly ten years," he explained. He said, there are three sub-sectors that are projected to be able to record a good growth acceleration in 2021, namely the food, beverage, and paper and paper goods industries. His ministry noted that the beverage industry, for example, could grow 4.39 percent annually in 2021. Agus stated that his party will pay special attention to several manufacturing sectors, such as the pharmaceutical industry, medicinal products, chemicals, traditional medicines, and chemicals, goods made of chemicals, basic metals, and food.

This year, industrial growth is expected to return to a positive path. All manufacturing sub-sectors are predicted to be excited again. "Assuming the pandemic can be controlled and economic activity can recover, we project that the growth of the manufacturing industry in 2021 will grow by 3.95 percent," he said. This optimism is consistent with investment in the non-oil and gas processing industry, which is still growing positively. The reason is, although GDP growth is projected to contract 2.22 percent in 2020, the investment value will actually increase and has the potential to increase this year."Throughout 2020, the investment value of the non-oil and gas processing industry is estimated to reach Rp265.28 trillion or an increase of 24.48 percent from the realization of investment in 2019 worth Rp.213.11 trillion. This year, investment is projected to increase 21.97 percent to Rp323.56 trillion," he said.

The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) is targeting the realization of investment in the manufacturing sector in 2021 to reach IDR 323.56 trillion. Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said this projection was supported by the government's efforts to accelerate the process of national economic recovery (PEN) due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. "Investment is estimated to be a driving factor for industrial growth in 2021," said Agus Gumiwang in a virtual press conference at the End of 2020, Monday (28/12/2020).

According to him, several industrial sectors and sub-sectors will still be the prima donna for investors next year. Such as the food and beverage industry which is still an idol, as well as the basic metal, automotive and electronics sectors."There are several sub-sectors that we believe will grow, there are even sectors that grow sideways, higher than other sectors. And these are sectors that we definitely project will get more attention from potential investors," he said. He also paid special attention to the automotive industry sector, which is expected to grow stronger thanks to the electric vehicle program launched by the government."Automotive must be our strength, moreover we are pushing battery-based and electric motorized vehicles where we have large nickel raw materials," he continued.

Likewise with the medical device and pharmaceutical industry sectors, which now have a very large need during the Covid-19 pandemic. Agus Gumiwang also smelled the potential for more income in this sector. "Perhaps, in terms of size, the growth is not as big as that of other sectors. But we hope that investment growth, seen from the presentation compared to previous periods, will be encouraged so that it can grow much faster," he said.
