Leather Product Exports Increase by 8%

The government continues to pay full attention to the development of small and medium industries (SMEs) through the implementation of various coaching and facilitation programs. One of the SME center developments that has been realized by the Ministry of Industry together with the Yogyakarta Special Region Government is the development of the Manding Leather SME Center through the UPTD Ndalem Kulit Jogja (NKJ) located on Jalan Parangtritis KM 11, Manding, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The UPTD was revitalized using the Special Allocation Fund (DAK) funding scheme in 2024 which was implemented in the form of building construction, procurement of machinery and equipment, HR and competitiveness development activities, management and technical management activities, partnership development, and increasing access to export markets.

The Director General of Small, Medium and Miscellaneous Industries (IKMA) of the Ministry of Industry, Reni Yanita explained that the development of SME centers is expected to create a multiplier effect for strengthening the industrial ecosystem as a whole, including through the downstreaming of local raw material resources into quality products, as well as the development of the potential of SME communities in certain areas. Reni also said that the leather and leather products industry is one of the sub-sectors that has great potential in Indonesia. Nationally, exports of Indonesian leather and leather products in 2024 reached USD 4.6 billion, an increase of around 8% compared to the previous year. The export value is dominated by leather footwear at USD 3.1 billion or 69% of total exports of leather commodities and leather products, followed by bags and the like made of leather at USD 1.1 billion or 25.6% of the total value of leather and leather product exports. "Based on BPS data, leather goods are one of the four largest export commodities from the DIY Province, so it can be stated that leather goods from Jogja have quite good potential and need to be improved further," he said.
