The Bontang City Government Promotes The Fish Canning Industry

The City Government of Bontang, East Kalimantan, is preparing to develop a fish canning manufacturing industry, focusing on key commodities like skipjack, mackerel, and tuna. This initiative supports downstream processing and economic diversification to increase value-added production. A 2024 study by East Kalimantan Province using a SWOT analysis mapped Bontang’s investment potential. Although raw materials from local fishermen are abundant, long-term sustainability remains a priority to ensure consistent supply. The study also reviewed supporting infrastructure, including designated industrial zones, and highlighted the potential for significant local job creation in coastal areas.

Internal challenges include reliance on imported materials like tinplate, which increases production costs due to import duties. Infrastructure gaps—such as in roads, electricity, and water—also need attention to support sustainable operations. On the market side, national and international distribution holds strong potential. The development plan includes environmental and social safeguards such as waste management, emissions control, and sustainable fishing practices. According to Muhammad Aspiannur, Head of Bontang’s Investment Office, the study serves as the foundation for a sustainable, inclusive, and eco-friendly marine-based industrial strategy. Bontang’s vast marine resources, along with the future port in Bontang Lestari, make it a strategic hub for seafood processing and seaweed cultivation, which could support pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries.
