Bicycle Imports Increased to IDR 577 Billion, 95% Coming from China Bicycle imports during the first half of this year jumped to 24.8%.

The sports trend that increased during the corona pandemic also boosted bicycle imports to the country. The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that the value of bicycle imports during the first semester of 2020 jumped to 24.82% on an annual basis or year on year (yoy) compared to the same period last year.
The majority are imported from China. In detail, the import value of two-wheeled bicycles and other bicycles in January-June 2020 reached US $ 39.02 million or around IDR 577 billion (exchange rate of IDR 14,800 per US dollar). The import value increased by US $ 7.76 million compared to the first semester of 2019 of US $ 31.26 million.
Based on the weight, the total imports of two-wheeled bicycles and others in the first semester of 2020 reached 15.51 million kilograms (kg), up 20.7% compared to last year in the same period of 12.85 million kg.

Based on country of origin, the largest imports in the first semester of 2020 came from China with a value of US $ 37.26 million and a weight of 15.46 million kg. This is equivalent to 95% of the total import value during the first semester of 2020.
Then followed by Taiwan with a value of US $ 1.01 million and a weight of 21.62 thousand kg and Britain with US $ 440.37 thousand with a weight of 440.37 thousand kg. On a monthly basis, the import value of bicycles was high on the last January, namely US $ 11.9 million.
However, the import value decreased in February and March with a value of US $ 3.49 million and US $ 1.98 million, respectively. Bicycle imports began to show stretching in April or one month after the first case of Covid-19 was found in Indonesia. Meanwhile, the increase in imports in April reached 184.84% compared to the previous month.

The increase in the import value of bicycles occurred again in June 2020. Data shows that the value of bicycle imports in June was US $ 10.92 million or an increase of 117.09% from the previous month. Likewise, imports of bicycle parts have also increased during the pandemic.
In the first semester of 2020, the import value of bicycle parts reached US $ 109.95 million, an increase of 35.6% compared to January-June 2019 valued at US $ 81.03 million. Based on weight, imports of bicycle parts in the first semester of 2020 reached 23.84 million kg, up 21.5% yoy.

On a monthly basis, the import value of bicycle parts experienced a surge in April and June with an increase of 52.36% and 70.32% respectively compared to the previous month. As is known, the trend of cycling has spread in some urban communities. Bike to Work Co-Founder Abby Kahuna said that the impact of easing the PSBB made the number of people working on bicycles to increase three to five times compared to before the pandemic.

Not only that, as a recreational sport, cycling is also a means of entertainment to get rid of boredom after months of confining yourself at home. Seeing this, the government has tightened regulations on imports of two-wheeled and three-wheeled bicycles to spur local production.
The Ministry of Trade issued Regulation of the Minister of Trade (Permendag) Number 68 of 2020 concerning Provisions for the Import of Footwear, Electronics, and Two-Wheeled and Tricycle Bicycles. This Regulation of the Minister of Trade was enacted on August 19, 2020 and came into effect on August 28, 2020. The Regulation of the Minister of Trade regulates that the import of two-wheeled and three-wheeled bicycles requires an Import Approval that is valid for a maximum of a year.

In addition, importation can only be done through the ports listed in the Minister of Trade Regulation. In cyberspace, the word bicycle has become one of the most popular search keywords according to Google Keyword Planner data during the corona pandemic. Based on the findings in March 2020, the keyword "Folding Bikes" was found only 90,500 times.

The increase began in April by 82% to 165,000, which was the beginning of the implementation of the PSBB. In May, searches on Google using these keywords were still stable with the previous month. A significant increase occurred in June 2020 to 644% from March 2020 to a total of 673,000 keywords.
