West Papua's Exports Increased by 37.29 Percent in July 2024

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of West Papua recorded an export realization of USD 436.45 million for July 2024, reflecting a 37.29% month-to-month (mtm) increase. Merry, Head of BPS West Papua, reported in Manokwari on Monday that mineral fuels, primarily oil and gas (migas), contributed 99.15% or USD 432.74 million of the total exports. The remaining 0.85%, equivalent to USD 3.71 million, was from non-oil and gas commodities. Merry explained that the value of oil and gas exports increased by 36.59% (mtm), or USD 115.93 million, compared to June 2024, which recorded USD 316.82 million. Non-oil and gas commodity exports also showed positive growth, up 237.14% (mtm), or USD 2.61 million, compared to the previous month's USD 1.10 million. The top three export destinations for West Papua in July 2024 were China at USD 181.07 million, Japan at USD 123.51 million, and South Korea at USD 123.47 million. Other notable export destinations included Mexico, Hong Kong, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, the United States, Thailand, and Malaysia. Exports to Asian countries were predominant, with China accounting for 41.49%, Japan 28.30%, and South Korea 28.29% of the total export volume. During the same period, imports to West Papua totaled USD 6.45 million, sourced primarily from Australia (98.76%), Japan (1.08%), and Poland (0.15%). The imports were exclusively non-oil and gas commodities, such as optical devices and machinery. From January to July 2024, West Papua's total exports were USD 2,074.83 million and imports USD 14.20 million, resulting in a trade surplus for the region.
