Prof. Dr. Ir. Luh Suriati, MSi, from the Faculty of Agriculture at Warmadewa University (FP-Unwar), highlighted the potential of Bali's coffee sector during a workshop on post-harvest coffee handling in Wanagiri Village, Sukasada District, Buleleng, on Monday, August 5, 2024. According to Prof. Suriati, sustainable farming practices can help coffee farmers not only increase their income but also preserve the environment for future generations. She emphasized that Bali coffee has significant potential to penetrate international markets, and by adopting the green economy concept, farmers can produce high-quality, sustainable coffee.
Prof. Suriati pointed out that sustainable farming practices enhance the quality of coffee and protect the environment. Environmentally friendly coffee processing methods, such as using coffee waste as organic fertilizer and renewable energy, add significant value. She explained that the green economy concept aligns well with Bali's coffee agriculture. By managing natural resources wisely, high-quality coffee with substantial economic value can be produced. She acknowledged that while the green economy concept might seem extensive and complex, its implementation can begin with small steps taken by each coffee farmer. Two effective initial steps include reducing pesticide use and converting coffee processing waste into animal feed or compost. Prof. Suriati expressed hope that farmers in Wanagiri Village would lead the development of the green economy concept in coffee cultivation. Given Wanagiri's reputation as an ecotourism destination, it has various potential commodities to develop, with coffee being a prominent example.
