AI Innovation Expected to Boost Indonesia’s Economic Growth

The Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs is optimistic that innovation and development in artificial intelligence (AI) will significantly drive Indonesia’s economic growth. "We are confident about AI. By digitalizing our economy with AI, we can make it more efficient and straightforward," said Rachmat Kaimuddin, Deputy for Infrastructure and Transportation Coordination at the ministry, during the launch of the Artificial Intelligence Institute for Progress (AIIP) in Jakarta on Tuesday, 25 June 2024. AIIP is a leading incubator-accelerator program in Indonesia focused on AI. Rachmat emphasized the need for Indonesia to actively participate in AI development and master this technology. "We must dominate AI and ensure that more companies use this technology to boost the economy," he stated. Rachmat sees the launch of AIIP as a crucial step in advancing AI in Indonesia. The government's role, he noted, is to create relevant and supportive regulations for AI development. He also stressed the importance of using low-emission energy sources in operating AI-related equipment and infrastructure. "Developing AI cannot be done alone. Therefore, industry players, the government, and all societal elements must collaborate," Rachmat added.

Jeffrey Joe, General Partner at Alpha JWC Ventures, explained that AIIP aims to apply AI technology to real-world problems, providing valuable solutions across various industries and sectors. "AI can positively transform industries, address societal challenges, and drive economic growth. We are motivated by this mission and aim to position Indonesia as a key player in the AI field," Jeffrey said. AIIP includes ‘Playground’ and ‘Sandbox’ programs, running for a total of 18 weeks and concluding with a Demo Day. The initiative focuses on developing and connecting promising AI startups with both the private and public sectors in Indonesia. By fostering AI development and integration, Indonesia seeks to harness the technology’s potential to enhance economic efficiency and stimulate substantial growth across multiple sectors.
