From Local to Global: Indonesia's Textile, Footwear, and Leather Industries Poised for Export Domination

Indonesia's economy managed to grow positively by 5.31% year on year (YoY) in 2022, despite facing tough challenges and the threat of recession.

One of the sectors that catalyzed the national economic performance is the Textile and Textile Products (TPT) and Footwear industry sector.

Deputy for Coordination of Trade and Industry Ali Murtopo Simbolon said that Indonesia itself has the potential to become the main market, production base, and center of the world's TPT and footwear industry exports, with many advantages.

He stated that in 2022, the TPT trade balance performance had a surplus of US$3.71 billion, up 3.34% from the previous period. The same applies to footwear, which had a surplus of US$1.03 billion, up 41% from the previous period.

"The United States and Europe remain the top export destinations for both of these industries," said Ali in his official statement on Thursday (March 23).

Ali also mentioned that Indonesia is the world's 16th largest economy, has a very low chance of recession at 3% in 2023, a very large domestic market with a population of 273 million, increasing demographic bonuses, and relatively stable political and economic conditions.

He also referred to Adidas Indonesia as one of the biggest contributors to TPT and footwear exports, realizing exports worth US$2.54 billion in 2022. Even exports to Europe reached US$826.6 million, or equivalent to 33% of total exports.

"For this reason, I invite all principals and top executives of Adidas Group contractors who are present today not to hesitate and immediately invest in filling the supply chain gaps of Adidas Indonesia, so that Indonesia can move forward as the main market, production base, and global export hub for the TPT and footwear industry," he concluded.

High competitiveness is the key to achieving optimal export performance. However, raw material imports are an integral part that cannot be separated. Supply chain integration challenges are essential to be resolved soon.
